"The Arthashastra Institute's central raison d”etre is to deepen the foundations of high quality, evidence-based research, persuasive analysis, and strategic policy formulation in Indonesia's young, highly decentralised democracy. A critical driving force of such research, publication and communication focus is the desire to contribute towards economic and social stability in the South-South East Asian region. A closer, open, mutually beneficial and supportive strategic and economic relationship between Indonesia and India lies at the heart of such stability.
Despite the fact that both Indonesia and India have emerged as two of the most dynamic power houses on the evolving global stage, they function within an international ecosystem of treaties, conventions, regulations and understandings. Neither markets nor states operate in a global vacuum. Navigating what can be treacherous waters of global politics and competing self-interest, requires the ability to forecast, assess and construct strategic visions and policies. This is just what the Arthashastra Institute hopes to provide.
The third intended contribution of the Arthashastra is to provide the platform and avenue of institutional partnerships of similar organisations in selected countries on the international stage both public and private.
The latent, yet already obvious dangers of our age: climate change, pandemics, AI, cross border migration, social inequality, ageing populations, genetic engineering, depleting food and water supplies all require cooperative thinking and action. Where best to begin than by bringing together, even in a small way two of the largest nations of South and SouthEast Asia.
The task is therefore difficult and requires new forms of thinking and organisation. The Arthashastra Institute can help not by becoming another Centre of scholarly publication or lengthy debate, but be an identifier, enabler, facilitator, coordinator and partner in issues most urgent and relevant to its overall enterprise. The core of such a mission is to foster an ever-closer government to government, enterprise to enterprise and people to people understanding between the two largest countries in South East and South Asia.
The Arthashastra strives to be nimble, technically sound and highly effective tool of strategic analysis; with an ability to marshal complex data, develop extensive networks of the best minds and institutions: and with an uncanny ability to connect the dots. It aims to be an analyst, a predictor of alternative scenarios and outcomes, a facilitator of dialogue and negotiation and a proven supporter of much closer Indonesia-India friendship.
The overall enterprise of the Arthashastra Institute is no doubt ambitious. It is nothing less than systematically bringing together our most talented minds to write a new history of our two countries: Indonesia and India, both finding a new voice and dominant place in today's turbulent world.
It is easy to be discouraged by such a challenge yet large endeavours have small beginnings. The Arthashastra Institute is determined to be a humble contributor to just such a small beginning.
The Asian Century might not have arrived and developed as some had hoped at the beginning of the Millennium. Yet, much of the Century lies before us. We have much to do. Join us, challenge us, debate and criticise us, suggest new and better ways of thinking and doing. The Arthashastra Institute aims to be a thinker, an explorer, a predictor, a partner and a critic. Above all it intends to contribute to the rational thinking, compassionate action and humanist science in our two, historically close and culturally secure societies on the globe."
